How to Clean and Care for Your Jewelry – A Wholesale Guide for Retailers

Proper care extends the life of any jewelry piece. As a manufacturer, we recommend sharing these tips with your customers to reduce returns and increase satisfaction.

sterling silver jewelry

For 18K Gold Plated over Sterling Silver Jewelry
Gold plating is beautiful but requires gentle handling.

Avoid water, sweat, and perfume. Apply makeup, lotion, and perfume before putting on jewelry. Alcohol is a hidden enemy of gold plating.

Store properly. Always place pieces in sealed bags when not in use to prevent oxidation.

Daily cleaning (dust, sweat, fingerprints): Use a soft cotton cloth, eyeglass cloth, or microfiber cloth. Wipe gently in one direction – do not scrub back and forth.

Slightly tarnished or dirty: Mix warm water with a drop of mild dish soap. Soak for 1–2 minutes. Gently brush crevices with a soft makeup brush or toothbrush. Rinse with clean water and pat dry immediately with a soft cloth.

Wear & Care Rules (Share with your customers)
Put jewelry on last. Finish your routine – perfume, hairspray, lotion – before adding jewelry.

Store separately. Never mix different pieces in one bag. Metal-on-metal friction causes wear. Use a compartmented box or individual sealed bags.

Know when to remove. Take off jewelry before exercise, showering, swimming, or using cleaning products. Sweat, chlorine, hot water, and detergents gradually damage plating.

Note for retailers: Even the best plating may fade over time. With proper care, your customers will extend its beauty. And when the gold eventually wears away to reveal the silver base? That’s simply its own unique story – not a defect.

stainless steel jewelry

Very durable and water-resistant.

Rinse with clean water and dry with a soft cloth.

Colored plating may fade with sweat. Keep dry to extend color life.

After ocean swimming: Rinse thoroughly with fresh water.

Quick Long-Lasting Care Tips (For Customer Handouts)
✅ Remove jewelry before showering, sweating, applying perfume, or using skincare products.

✅ Store pieces separately in sealed bags to prevent oxidation.

✅ Avoid pulling, rubbing, or friction – this reduces wear on plating.

General Best Practices (For All Metals)
Avoid chemicals. Perfumes, cosmetics, and cleaning agents can corrode jewelry and cause dullness. Always remove pieces before using these products.

Clean regularly. Soak titanium steel pieces in warm water with a drop of mild dish soap for a few minutes. Wipe gently with a soft cloth.

⚠️ Do not use brushes or abrasive cloths – they can damage the protective anti-oxidation layer.

Store properly. Make sure pieces are completely dry, then wrap them in a soft cloth and place them in a sealed bag. Avoid storing different metals together to prevent scratching.

Avoid impact and friction. Titanium steel is tough, but repeated bumps or rubbing can still cause damage. Remove jewelry before sports, heavy housework, or any rough activity.
